The car moves, but sluggishly: flooring the throttle changes nothing, the revs climb reluctantly. Often the lamp is on as well.
You can usually get home or to a garage, but every day of delay adds to the bill.
What to look at in the live data
- Stored codes: limp mode almost always comes with one.
- Throttle position: does it reach a hundred per cent with the pedal down.
- Air flow at 3000 rpm — low means a blocked intake or exhaust.
- Boost pressure, if the engine is turbocharged.
Common causes, cheapest first
- Limp mode from a stored fault — read it first.
- A clogged air filter.
- A blocked catalyst or diesel particulate filter: the engine cannot breathe out.
- A mass air flow sensor reading low.
- The turbocharger or its control.
