Dashboard warning lights: what each one means

Red, amber and green warning lights explained: what the symbol means, whether you can keep driving and what to do right now.

Red — stop now

A red lamp means you should not keep driving. Pull over, switch the engine off and sort it out there.

Amber — check soon

An amber lamp means you can drive on, but do not put it off. The car runs in a protective mode and usually drinks more.

Green or blue — information only

These lamps are not about a fault: they say a system is switched on, or remind you of something simple to do.

Symbols differ between makes: the same fault may be drawn differently on your dashboard. If yours is not here, read the codes with an adapter — the car always writes the fault down.
