Fault code P0128: the thermostat or the sensor
The engine never reaches operating temperature. The part is cheap, but replacing it blind is still a bad idea.
P0128 means exactly this: the unit expected the engine to reach operating temperature within a set time, and it did not.
It is the most common «winter» code and one of the few faults you can see without a scanner: the heater blows lukewarm and the temperature needle sits lower than usual.
Why it is not a small thing
A cold engine runs rich all the time. Which means:
- a litre or so more fuel per hundred kilometres;
- oil diluted with fuel;
- a catalyst that never reaches working temperature and wears faster;
- a cold cabin.
What to check
- The coolant level. Cheapest of all and takes a minute. Low coolant or air in the system gives the same picture.
- The temperature reading in the app. Watch the number, not the needle: on many cars the needle deliberately sticks in the middle of the scale so as not to alarm the owner. Normal running is 85–95 °C.
- How the temperature behaves on the motorway. If it falls at speed, that is an almost certain sign of a thermostat stuck open: cold air cools the radiator and the thermostat does not close.
- The temperature sensor itself. If the dashboard needle and the app disagree, the sensor is to blame, not the thermostat — and that is P0117 or P0118.
What it usually turns out to be
A thermostat stuck open, in the great majority of cases. The part is cheap, but it is worth replacing after the check rather than instead of it: the same code comes from a lying sensor and from low coolant, and those cost different money.
After the repair
Clear the code and drive your usual route. If it does not come back over several trips, the job is done. Check the readiness monitors as well: clearing resets them, and without them an inspection cannot be passed.
