Fault code P0171: where to start
«System too lean» is the most common entry in the engine memory. The cause is almost never the part people suspect first.
P0171 means one thing: the control unit adds more fuel than it expected to and the mixture is still lean. It is not a diagnosis, it is a message saying «more air is coming in than I accounted for».
What to check, in order
- An air leak after the mass air flow sensor. A cracked hose, a hardened seal, a loose clamp. The most common and the cheapest cause.
- The mass air flow sensor. It rarely fails at once: more often it reads low gradually, and the car drives slightly worse for months.
- The crankcase ventilation valve. A stuck valve gives exactly the same picture.
- The injectors. Check them last — they cost more than everything above put together.
How the app narrows it down
Look not at the code itself but at the fuel trims — the app shows them in live data.
- If the trim is large at idle and mostly disappears at speed, look for an air leak.
- If it stays the same in every mode, suspicion moves to the air flow sensor.
Clearing the code and driving on is not a cure. The entry comes back within a few trips, and once misfires begin, the extra fuel goes into the catalytic converter — and instead of a five-dollar hose you replace the whole thing.
Build a report in the app and show it to your mechanic. The conversation «here are the trims at idle and on the motorway» is shorter and cheaper than «the check engine light is on».
