Intake manifold runner flaps: P2004, P2006, P2008, P2015

Low-end pull has gone, the diesel started smoking and the idle turned rough — and there is an intake runner code on the list. Nine times out of ten this is soot, not a broken actuator.

Intake manifold runner flaps: P2004, P2006, P2008, P2015

The short answer: the intake manifold holds movable flaps that swirl the air at low revs. They grow a coating of soot and stop moving. They are cleaned rather than replaced — if you get to them in time.

What they are for

At low revs little air enters the cylinder and it mixes lazily with the fuel. The flaps narrow the port and swirl the flow — the mixture becomes more uniform, the engine pulls from low down and smokes less.

At high revs they get in the way instead: a lot of air is needed, so the flaps open fully.

Hence two opposite codes and two different sets of symptoms.

P2004 — stuck open. Low-end pull disappears, the engine only wakes up past three thousand. A diesel starts to smoke.

P2006 — stuck closed. The opposite: it pulls from low down but runs out of breath under acceleration — the engine is short of air.

P2008 — actuator circuit. This is electrics: the connector, the motor, or the vacuum valve, depending on how your car is built.

P2015 — flap position sensor. The most common one on German diesels: the flap itself is fine, but the position sensor (often built into the actuator) stops telling the truth.

Why it is almost always soot

The flaps live in the intake, where two dirty roads meet: exhaust gas recirculation and crankcase fumes. Soot mixed with oil forms a sticky coating that builds up on the flap spindles year after year.

First they start moving stiffly, then they seize. The actuator is intact — it simply cannot turn what has glued itself together.

⚠️ That is why it happens sooner on cars used for short trips: the exhaust never warms up and more soot forms. The same reason the particulate filter clogs.

What you can see in the app

There is no direct «flap position» reading in the mandatory OBD-II set. But two things say enough.

Intake manifold pressure at idle and under gentle acceleration: if the flaps are stuck closed it behaves differently from a healthy car — the air is cramped.

Calculated load: with P2004 it sits noticeably higher than usual at low revs — the engine is struggling with what used to be easy.

And do take a freeze frame: a code at 1200 rpm and a code at 3500 mean different things.

⚠️ Do not confuse these with the electronic throttle. It is also a flap, also with a motor, and also grows deposits — but it is a different assembly with different codes, covered separately in electronic throttle.

What to do

  1. Remove and clean the manifold. On most engines this is half a day's work and costs incomparably less than a new assembly.
  2. Check the actuator linkage by hand while the manifold is off: the flaps must move without effort.
  3. Inspect the vacuum lines if the actuator is vacuum operated. A cracked pipe produces exactly the same codes.
  4. Clean the EGR valve while you are there — it sits nearby and collects the same soot.
  5. After reassembly clear the code and drive several times, accelerating from low revs to four thousand: the unit needs to satisfy itself the flaps move.
