Diesel particulate filter
The particulate filter has clogged and needs regeneration. The lamp comes on when the car could not burn it clean itself — usually because of short trips.
An amber lamp means you can drive on, but do not put it off. The car runs in a protective mode and usually drinks more.
What to do now
- Take a twenty-minute motorway run at higher revs than usual, without stopping the engine.
- Do not switch the engine off in the middle of a regeneration: next time it starts from the beginning.
- If the lamp stays on after such a run, the regeneration is not completing and it needs looking into.
