Power steering

The power assistance has switched off. The steering still works, but it takes noticeably more effort — especially when parking.

An amber lamp means you can drive on, but do not put it off. The car runs in a protective mode and usually drinks more.

What to do now

  1. Drive carefully: at low speed the wheel gets heavy abruptly, and that takes you by surprise.
  2. On an electric system a restart sometimes clears it.
  3. On a hydraulic system check the fluid level and the belt.
