Limp mode: the car will not go faster than 60
The revs will not climb, the pedal does nothing, the speed hits a ceiling. That is not a broken gearbox — it is protection.

The car moves, but as if on a rope: the revs will not climb past two or three thousand, the speed stops at 40–80 km/h, the throttle feels dead. Often the Check Engine lamp is on, sometimes a gearbox symbol as well.
This is limp mode. The control unit saw a fault that makes normal operation risky and deliberately limited the engine so that you get there rather than stop where you are.
Why this is good news
Limp mode is not a fault in itself; it is the consequence of one and the protection against it. It says: «you can drive, but gently and not far». The car is looking after itself — usually the engine, the gearbox or the turbo.
What usually triggers it
- The throttle or pedal position sensor. Two sensors on one assembly disagree, the unit does not know which to believe and closes the power down. Look at the throttle position and both pedal sensors: they must move in step.
- Boost out of range. The turbo is not making the commanded pressure — or is making too much. That is P0299 and its relatives.
- The air meter. A lying sensor gives a guessed mixture, and the unit prefers to limit the engine.
- Misfires. Too many misfires and the power is cut so the catalyst is not destroyed — the same case as a blinking Check Engine.
- The gearbox. Its own fault often locks one gear: you drive «in third» and no faster.
What to do right now
- Pull over and switch off. Some cases clear on a restart: if the fault was a one-off, the unit comes out of protection by itself.
- Started again and it is still there — read the code. Guessing is the most expensive option: there are a dozen causes and they need different actions.
- Do not «clear it and drive». Clearing removes the lamp, but the unit goes back into protection at the first confirmation of the fault — and you lose the freeze frame, the conditions under which it all happened.
What it looks like in the data
The pedal is on the floor and the throttle position never reaches a hundred per cent — the unit itself will not let the throttle open. That is the signature of limp mode: it is not that the driver is not pressing, it is that the car will not allow it.
