Intake air temp sensor: P0111, P0112, P0113 and fuel use
A penny sensor that can quietly ruin both starting and fuel consumption. It takes ten seconds and no tools to check — just compare two numbers in the app.

The check worth opening the app for right now: on a cold car that has stood overnight, intake air temperature, coolant temperature and ambient air temperature must all read roughly the same.
Ten degrees apart or more means the sensor is lying. There may be no code at all.
Why the car needs this temperature
The unit needs to know not the volume of air but its mass: cold air is denser, holds more oxygen and needs more fuel. The difference between minus twenty and plus forty is about twenty per cent in density.
A lying sensor is a permanent error in the mixture calculation, which the unit compensates with fuel trims. For a while it compensates successfully, and all the owner sees is higher fuel use.
What the codes mean
P0112 — low signal. The sensor reports impossibly hot air (often «plus one hundred and fifty»). The unit assumes thin air and leans the mixture. The result: hard starting and hesitation when cold.
P0113 — high signal. The reverse: «minus forty» on a summer day. The unit enriches the mixture, fuel use rises, the plugs go black.
P0111 — reading out of range. The trickiest: the value is plausible but does not match the rest. For instance «plus ninety» air with a cold engine.
P0096 — the same about a second sensor: forced induction engines often measure the temperature before and after the intercooler.
Why it is often not the sensor
On many cars the intake air temperature sensor is built into the mass airflow sensor — meaning it is replaced together with it and no longer costs pennies.
Hence the rule: before replacing anything, check the connector and the cleanliness of the sensing element itself. An oily film from a performance air filter, or ordinary dust, slows the sensor down: it reports not the current temperature but yesterday's.
What it looks like from the driver's seat
- Hard starting when hot — a classic for P0112: the unit thinks the air is already hot and delivers too little fuel.
- Hard starting when cold — the reverse picture; the procedure is in hard starting when cold.
- The fault only appears in frost — more likely the connector than the sensor; such intermittent troubles have their own piece, a fault only in frost or rain.
- Fuel use up with no other signs — the most common and most underrated case.

What to do
- Compare the three temperatures on a cold car — that is the main check.
- Start it and let it warm up: the air temperature should rise by 10–20 degrees from under-bonnet heat, but not jump around.
- Inspect the connector and clean the sensing element.
- Look at the fuel trims before and after the repair — if they came back to zero, this was the cause.
