In winter a car behaves differently: what is normal
High revs on start-up, white vapour, higher consumption — all normal. Here is what is not.

When the cold arrives, garages fill with people whose cars are fine — and miss the ones whose cars are not. Here is where the line runs.
This is normal
High revs for the first minutes. The unit holds 1100–1500 rpm until the catalyst warms up. The colder it is, the longer that takes.
White vapour from the tailpipe in frost. That is condensation, not smoke. Easy to tell apart: vapour vanishes in a second, smoke hangs and smells.
Consumption up by a litre or so. A cold engine runs rich, the oil is thick, the heater and the heated glass draw current, and winter tyres add drag.
Hunting idle on a cold engine. For the first half-minute, ordinary.
Fuel trims positive when cold. Also normal: the unit is adding on purpose.
This is not normal
The heater blows lukewarm and the needle stays low. The thermostat — that is P0128, and winter is when it shows up first.
The revs do not drop after ten minutes. Warm-up revs should go once operating temperature is reached.
The starter turns slowly and the dashboard lights dim. The battery. Look at the voltage: usually 13.8–14.6 V with the engine running, and below 9–10 V while cranking means the battery is not coping.
It stumbles during warm-up and stops afterwards. Plugs or a coil at the end of their life: in summer the spark is enough, in winter it is not.
Thick white smoke with a falling coolant level. That is no longer vapour — that is coolant in the cylinders, and you should not drive.
What to check before the frost
- Battery voltage and age. A battery over four years old is the first candidate for replacement before winter.
- Stored codes. Summer «trifles» become winter failures: a weak spark, an air leak, a tired sensor.
- Readiness monitors, if an inspection is due.
