Fuel pressure: codes P0087, P0088 and P0089
The car jerks under load and dies on a climb. How to tell a tired pump from a blocked filter and from the sensor simply lying.

These codes appear when the pressure in the fuel rail is not what the control unit expects. It usually feels like this: fine on a flat road, but under load — uphill, overtaking, with a full car — the engine jerks, loses power or dies.
What each code means
P0087 — pressure below target. There is not enough fuel exactly when most is needed. The most common and cheapest answer here is a blocked fuel filter.
P0088 — pressure above target. Usually the regulator or the return line: the fuel has nowhere to bleed off.
P0089 — the regulator does not hold its characteristic. The unit asks for one pressure, gets another, and the gap is too large to blame on tolerance.
What to look at in the app
Not every car reports the pressure itself: this parameter is not in the mandatory OBD-II set. If yours does, read it under load rather than at idle: at idle the demand is small and a weak pump copes.
Even without the pressure there is an indirect sign: fuel trims. When fuel is short the unit adds more, and the trims move to a steady plus — the more, the higher the load.
Telling them apart
The filter fails gradually: first power drops only uphill with a full car, a month later on any overtake. It is cheap to replace, and it is where to start.
The pump usually gets louder and fails on a warm car: hot fuel cools it worse.
The sensor lies instantly and without warning: yesterday all was well, today there is a code and the car behaves exactly as before. That is an important sign — if a code is there but nothing is wrong to drive, suspect the meter rather than what it measures.
What not to do
Clear the code and drive on. Low pressure under load means a lean mixture at the hottest moment of the engine's work, and that leads straight to burnt parts and misfires. Clearing is the easiest thing to do, and this is exactly the code not to put off.
