Hybrids and EVs: what an ordinary scanner will show
The same socket, but less data than people expect. Honestly: what reads, what does not, and why the battery's health is not checked this way.

The question comes up regularly: if I plug an adapter into a hybrid, will I see the battery's condition? The honest answer is probably not, and here is why.
What the OBD-II socket must provide
The socket exists for emissions law, and the law demands one thing of a car: to report, over a single protocol, everything affecting the exhaust. There is more on that in why a scanner does not show ABS and airbag faults.
The consequence is simple: on a hybrid the petrol side reads like any ordinary car — engine codes, mixture, catalyst, readiness monitors. The high-voltage side is outside the law, and the maker speaks about it in a protocol of its own.
What usually does read on a hybrid
- Every P code relating to the petrol engine.
- Revs, coolant temperature, load, air flow.
- Oxygen sensors and the catalyst.
- Readiness monitors — they build up more slowly on a hybrid because the engine is often off.
What almost certainly will not
- The state of the high-voltage battery: capacity, degradation, cell spread. This is exactly what people want to see before buying — and exactly what the standard protocol does not give.
- Battery temperature and current, inverter operation.
- Codes from the hybrid control unit — they live in a separate module.
There are make-specific apps for that data. A generic adapter does not replace them, and promising otherwise would be dishonest.
Stricter still with an EV
A pure electric car has no petrol engine at all, and therefore none of what the socket was designed for. The socket is formally there, it answers little, and almost nothing useful to the owner comes over the standard protocol.
That is not a shortcoming of the adapter: there is simply nothing to read.
What this means when buying
If you are looking at a used hybrid, remember: a scanner check does not replace a battery check. The scanner will honestly show the state of the petrol side — which still matters, nobody has abolished it — but it will say little about the battery.
Everything else worth looking at is covered in checking a car before buying: active and stored codes, readiness monitors, live data. All of that works on a hybrid.
