Why a scanner does not show ABS, airbag and gearbox faults
The ABS light is on, and the app says «no faults». The tool is not broken — it is looking elsewhere, and here is why.

A common story: the ABS or airbag light is on, the owner plugs in an adapter, and the app answers «no faults». It looks as if the adapter is poor or the app is weak. In fact nothing is broken.
A car has a dozen units, not one
The engine has its own control unit. The brakes and ABS have another. The airbags a third. The gearbox, climate, lights and doors, several more. They all talk over a shared bus, and each keeps its own fault memory.
The OBD-II socket is a door into the car, not into a particular unit. Through that one door you can question different units — but each must be questioned separately and in its own language.
The standard is mandatory only for emissions
The OBD-II socket did not appear for the owner's convenience; it appeared for emissions law. The law requires the car to report, over a single protocol, everything that affects the exhaust: mixture, ignition, catalyst, readiness monitors.
That is why P codes read the same on any make. Everything else — ABS, airbags, climate — is outside the law, and the manufacturer is free to speak about it in a protocol of its own. Often a closed one.
Hence a simple rule: the letter of a code almost always tells you whether an ordinary adapter will see it. What the letters mean is covered in the anatomy of a code.
Then why are ABS codes in the reference
The reference describes codes, not what one particular adapter can read. C0035 exists, it has a precise meaning, and knowing it is useful: a garage may quote it to you, show it on their own tool or write it on a job sheet. Understanding what you were told is worth something regardless of what read the code.
We chose not to throw these codes out of the reference — and equally not to pretend that any thirty-rouble adapter will read them.
What to do when the ABS light is on
- Read the engine codes anyway. Sometimes the ABS light comes on together with a communication fault — a U code. If U0100 is there, the cause may be shared: power, an earth, a damaged bus.
- Check the obvious yourself. Wheel speed sensors sit at the hubs; their connectors fill with dirt and salt and the wire chafes against the arch liner. That is the commonest cause and you can see it.
- Note when the light appeared. Right after a hub bearing or a wheel was changed — the sensor was almost certainly disturbed. After a pressure wash — water in the connector.
- Reading it needs a different tool. A dealer scanner or software for that specific make. How it differs from an ordinary one is covered here.
Airbags deserve extra care
The airbag unit is not a place to experiment with reading and clearing codes using random software. A wrong write into it can end with the airbag failing to fire in a crash, or firing without one. If the SRS light is on, that is a conversation with a garage, not with a cheap adapter.
What these codes mean, by group
Since you arrived from a particular code page — here is the meaning of what you read. It is the same across makes, even when the code itself can only be read with dealer equipment.
C00xx — wheel speed sensors. C0031, C0034, C0037, C003A — one per wheel; C0035, C0040, C0045 mean «no signal at all». This is the most common group, and the cause is nearly always mechanical: dirt and salt in the connector at the hub, a wire chafed against the arch liner, a sensor disturbed while replacing a bearing. C1145 is an intermittent signal, meaning a corroded connector: it comes and goes, and is the hardest of all to catch.
C0050 — wheel readings disagree. A special case: the sensors are fine but one wheel turns differently from the rest. Look at tyre pressures and tyre sizes first, not at the electrics — pressure has its own lamp.
C0044, C0051, C0196 — the stability sensors themselves: lateral acceleration, steering angle and yaw. They live in the cabin and more often get «out of calibration» than break: after suspension work or an alignment they need their zero point set.
C0061, C0110, C0121, C1095 — the ABS hydraulic unit and pump. Here it really is the assembly itself, and it is not a do-it-yourself repair.
C0561 — stability disabled by another module. Not an ABS fault: the system switched itself off because the trouble is in the engine, the gearbox or the power supply. Look for the code elsewhere — and first of all for U codes, lost communication.
B10xx — airbags and belts. B1015, B1016 — driver and passenger airbag circuits, B1025 — belt pretensioner, B1049 — impact sensor, B1055 — belt buckle. ⛔ This group is not to be read or cleared with random software: the price of a mistake is an airbag that does not deploy.
B1000, B1001, B1342, B2205 — the body control module itself and its configuration. B1001 and B2205 are not a failure but «the equipment level is not programmed»: routine after a module replacement.
B1318 — low module supply voltage. This is the code everyone whose «everything lit up at once» should read: it says the electronics are not at fault, the supply is. The procedure is in charging and vehicle voltage.
B1200, B2103 — climate control and exterior lighting. Everyday troubles: a heater flap, a lamp circuit.
⚠️ A general rule for this whole scattering: when there are many B and C codes at once, it is almost never many broken modules. What is broken is the supply or the bus — and the neighbouring U codes say the same.
In short
- OBD-II is mandatory only for what affects the exhaust: P codes.
- ABS, airbags and climate live in their own units, often on a closed protocol.
- C, B and U codes are in the reference so you understand what you are told — but not every adapter will read them.
- ABS light: start with your eyes — sensor connectors at the wheels, the wire, traces of recent work.
- Airbag light: straight to a garage, no experiments.
