Fault code P0420: the catalyst or just a sensor
The most expensive-looking code in the book. And the most common case of replacing a thousand-dollar part for nothing.

P0420 says exactly this: the control unit compared two oxygen sensors — before and after the catalytic converter — and found their signals too much alike. A healthy catalyst smooths the swings out; a worn one lets them straight through.
The conclusion «the catalyst is dead» suggests itself, but it is premature. The unit never measures the catalyst directly: it infers it from two sensors, and sensors can lie.
What to check before replacing anything
- The rear oxygen sensor. It is as old as the car and lives under the floor in salt and dirt. A tired sensor answers slowly — and that looks exactly like a worn catalyst.
- An air leak in the exhaust. A burnt manifold gasket or a crack ahead of the sensor mixes in extra oxygen. On a cold engine such a leak is usually audible.
- Neighbouring codes. P0130–P0141 for the sensors, P0171 for the mixture, P0300 for misfires — if any of them sits alongside, deal with that one first. Driving for long with misfires is what genuinely kills a catalyst.
- How the car drives. A blocked catalyst can be felt: power fades at high revs and the car seems to push against a wall. If the pull is there and fuel consumption is normal, there is no hurry.
About P0430
P0430 is the same code for the second bank of cylinders on a V engine. It is checked the same way. If both arrive together, the cause is almost certainly not two catalysts failing at once but something they share: the mixture, the fuel, an air leak.
Build a report in the app and show it to your mechanic along with the mileage: «P0420 with healthy pull and the original sensor since 2011» is a shorter and cheaper conversation than «the light is on, replace the catalyst».
