Secondary air: P0410, P0411, P0412 and the emissions test
The car drives fine, fuel use is normal, nothing rattles — yet the check light is on and the emissions test fails. That is what a system working for only ninety seconds after a cold start looks like.

The one thing that explains all the oddity of these codes: the secondary air system runs only on a cold engine and only for a minute or ninety seconds. The rest of the time it does nothing — and that is normal.
So the fault appears once a day, at the first morning start, and has no effect on how the car drives.
What the system is
A cold catalyst does not work: it needs to reach around three hundred degrees. While it is cold, everything leaving the engine goes straight into the air.
To shorten that minute, air is pumped into the exhaust right after starting by a separate pump. Leftover fuel burns off in the pipe itself, the exhaust heats faster, and the catalyst reaches working temperature sooner.
The side effect people recognise it by: a loud whirring under the bonnet for the first few seconds after a cold start. Many take it for a fault — it is precisely the system working.
What the codes mean
P0410 — system malfunction. A general conclusion.
P0411 — incorrect flow. The most common. The unit compared how the oxygen sensor reading changed when the pump switched on, and saw something other than expected. Too little air means blocked passages; too much air does not happen, but «none at all» happens often.
P0412 — valve circuit. Electrics: connector, relay or the valve itself.
Why it fails
The pump drives air into a red-hot exhaust. A check valve stops exhaust gas coming back — but in time it starts to leak, and soot and condensate get inside. Two outcomes follow:
- The passages coke up and air will not pass — P0411;
- Condensate floods the pump and kills it — especially in winter, where water in the pipe simply freezes.
⚠️ Hence a pattern visible in the data: secondary air codes appear en masse after the first cold spell. What else changes on a car in winter is in a car behaves differently in winter.
Why it matters for the emissions test
This is what the whole business is really about.
While the code is active, the secondary air self-test does not complete. The test station looks not only at the exhaust composition but at the readiness of the self-tests — and turns away a car with clean exhaust. In detail: readiness for the emissions test and failing the emissions test.

What to do
- Listen to the engine on a cold start. No whirring at all means the pump or its relay. Whirring present but the code still appears means the passages.
- Check the pump fuse and relay — it is a powerful one and sits separately.
- Inspect the check valve: if it leaks, it must be replaced too, or the new pump will die the same way.

- After the repair give the car several cold starts: the self-test runs once per trip and only from cold.
