Why the service reset does not work on every car

It is easy to promise a reset on every car. We say plainly where it will work and where it will not — and why.

Why the service reset does not work on every car

Reading fault codes and sensors is covered by a common standard: any car from 2001 onwards answers those requests the same way. Service routines are not part of that standard at all.

Three conditions, and you need all three

  1. The car must be able to. On some vehicles the interval is reset only through the instrument cluster with the steering wheel buttons — no scanner helps there.
  2. The right protocol is required. A reset goes to one specific module at its own address.
  3. The adapter must pass the command through. Cheap ELM327 clones send everything to the broadcast address, and the request never arrives.

What the app does

Before the operation CarScan checks the car-plus-adapter pair and shows one of three answers:

  • possible — the operation is available, carry on;
  • not on this car — and why;
  • the adapter cannot do it — with an explanation of what exactly is missing.
We deliberately do not show a button that «might work». A half-finished reset leaves the car with the reminder cleared and the counter untouched — that is, with the wrong date for the next service.
If the reset does not work on your car, the app is still useful: fault codes, live data, vehicle details and the report for the mechanic work everywhere.
