It stalled while driving: what to do and what to check
The engine dies at speed and the steering and brakes go heavy at once. Safety first, causes second.

The first thing to know: the car does not become uncontrollable. It becomes heavy — those are different things, and the difference decides everything.
The first seconds
- Hold the wheel with both hands. The assistance is off and the effort is several times higher, but the wheels still turn.
- Brake harder than usual. The vacuum servo works for another press or two, after which the pedal goes very firm. The brakes work; you must press in earnest.
- Do not switch the ignition off before stopping. On some cars that locks the steering.
- Put the hazards on and coast to the verge. The momentum is usually enough.
Do not try to bump-start at speed before assessing the situation. An engine catching suddenly with the wheels turned is more dangerous than a calm stop on the verge.
What to check once stopped
- Stored codes, straight away. A crankshaft sensor code is the most common answer to «it died and will not start».
- Voltage. A flat battery or a failed alternator kill the engine precisely on the move, when the electrical load is highest.
- Engine speed while cranking. If the app sees it, the crankshaft sensor is alive, which rules out the main suspect at once.
- The fuel level. An empty tank is embarrassing, but it happens more often than all the faults put together.
Common causes
- The crankshaft position sensor. A classic sudden death: it worked, then it did not, usually when hot.
- A bad earth or connector. An open circuit over a bump gives exactly this picture, and it is not found until someone moves the harness.
- The fuel pump or a clogged filter. It dies under load, then starts again ten minutes later and drives on.
- The alternator. The dashboard dims first, then everything goes off.
After the repair
Clear the code and drive your usual route several times, including a hot start: the freeze frame of the earlier fault hints at the conditions to repeat.
