«Lost communication»: codes U0100, U0101, U0121, U0140
Everything lit up at once — check, ABS, stability — and the scanner returned codes starting with U. This is almost never fried electronics: usually a battery terminal, a connector or a flat battery is to blame.

Codes starting with U do not mean «a module broke». They mean «a module went quiet». That difference decides everything: going quiet can be caused by a poor contact.
What actually happened
Modules in a car talk over a shared bus — two twisted wires everyone is connected to. Engine, transmission, ABS and body electronics hear each other and call out constantly. If someone stops answering, the others record a code about it.
So the code tells you who went quiet:
- U0100 — the engine;
- U0101 — the transmission;
- U0121 — the ABS and stability unit;
- U0140 — body electronics: lights, locks, windows;
- U0155 — the instrument cluster;
- U0151 — the airbag unit.
And codes U0001, U0073, U0074 are not about one silent module but about the bus itself: open, shorted or overloaded.
Why it is usually the power supply
To answer at all, a module needs three things: power, ground, and an intact bus wire. The first two fail far more often than the third.
The typical picture: the car stood for a while, the battery sagged, the voltage collapsed during cranking — and half the modules switched off for a fraction of a second. The car started, but every one of them logged a U code. Hence the main clue: many U codes at once is almost always the power supply, not ten broken modules.
It takes a minute to check. Open control module voltage with the engine running: it should read 13.8–14.6 V. Below 13 and the alternator is not keeping up — U codes will keep coming back no matter what you replace. Second most common: water and connectors
U codes love to show up after a wash, a deep puddle, or a repair where connectors were unplugged. Water in a connector does not short it dead — it makes the contact unstable, so the module disappears for a second here and a minute there.
If the check light came on right after a wash or heavy rain, start by inspecting connectors, not by buying a module.
Telling «went quiet» from «burnt out»
There is a simple check the app does itself. It polls the modules and shows who answered. If a module is in the list and responds, it is alive, and the U code describes the past rather than the present: it is stored, not active. The difference between those states is covered in active, stored or pending.
⚠️ The reverse is also true: silence in response to a request does not by itself prove a fault. Why — in «no response» is not «no faults».
What to do, in order
- Look at the battery terminals: corrosion, play, green deposits. Tighten them.
- Check the voltage with the engine running — 13.8–14.6 V.
- Clear the codes and drive a lap. All of them back at once means power or the bus; the same single one back means that module or its connector.
- Recall what was done the day before: a wash, a repair, an alarm or head unit fitted. Splicing into the wiring is a common cause of U0001 and U0073.
- If one specific module does not answer, look for its connector and ground, not for a new module.
Can you drive
It depends on who went quiet. U0121 and U0151 mean ABS and airbags are disabled — the car drives, but under emergency braking it behaves differently from what you are used to. U0100 usually drops the engine into limp mode. Neither is a «I will get to it next week» situation.
