Fuel level in the tank

The fuel level sender in the tank — the very float the gauge needle is drawn from. It rarely lies about anything important for the engine, but without a correct level the car cannot test the vapour system, which means it is not ready for the emissions test.

What it usually turns out to be

  • The needle did not move after twenty litres — the float has stuck.
  • A jump from 20 % straight to 90 % means the track is worn in the middle.
  • The needle disagreeing with your arithmetic on the last quarter is normal, not a code.
