Fuel level
How much fuel is left in the tank — the number the gauge needle is drawn from. The sender is a float, and in an oddly shaped tank it lies more at the quarters than in the middle.
What is normal
No change after refuelling means a stuck float. ⚠️ While the code is present some self-tests never finish and an emissions test can fail: the evaporative system is only checked at certain tank levels.
These figures hold for most cars, but the maker has the last word: some engines run hotter or idle higher by design.
We have a detailed piece on thisThe fuel gauge lies: codes P0460, P0461, P0462, P0463
