Secondary air injection

Secondary air injection: the pump that blows air into the exhaust for the first minute or so after a cold start, so the catalyst reaches working temperature sooner. The rest of the time it does nothing — and that is normal.

3 codes in this section, 3 with a guide

What it usually turns out to be

  • A loud whirring under the bonnet for the first seconds after a cold start is the system working, not a fault.
  • The code appears once a day, at the first morning start: that is the only time the system runs.
  • While the code is active the self-test does not complete — and the emissions test fails with clean exhaust.
