How to get ready for an emissions test in a week
The main reason for failure is not a fault but incomplete self-tests. Nothing in the car shows them.
A week ahead, read the codes and the readiness
A week is not a comfort margin but a necessity: if something has to be fixed and cleared, the car needs several days of driving to run its tests again. Starting the day before is already too late.
Look at the readiness monitors
This is what nothing in the car shows and the inspector sees at once. Incomplete monitors mean the codes were cleared recently — and even a healthy car fails. ⚠️ Code P1000 says exactly that and is not a fault.
Fix what affects the exhaust
Mixture, misfire, catalyst and fuel vapour codes all affect the result. Start cheap: the fuel cap tightened until it clicks, intact intake hoses, fresh plugs. The expensive parts are worth touching only once the cheap ones have been checked.
Build the readiness by driving normally
The tests run under different conditions: a cold start, town driving, the open road, engine braking. So it is not «half an hour of driving» but several ordinary days with cold starts. Check the readiness daily — it fills in one monitor at a time.
Once more, just before you go
Check that there are no active codes and the readiness is complete. And ⚠️ DO NOT clear the codes the day before: that resets the readiness and turns a healthy car into a failure.
