What OBD-II actually is, in plain words
The connector under the wheel, the app, codes like P0301 — what actually is all this, and where did it come from? No jargon.

OBD-II is not a device and not an app. It is an agreement: the same connector under the wheel and the same language to talk to it in — on every car of a given age, whatever the make.
Before that agreement, every manufacturer had its own connector and its own protocol: a BMW diagnostic tool did not understand questions phrased in Toyota's language. A mechanic needed a separate box for every brand. OBD-II is what removed that wall: one adapter and one app understand any car newer than a certain year.
Where it came from, and why it looks like this
It was not invented for the owner's convenience but for emissions control: regulators wanted a uniform way to ask any car whether its exhaust cleanup system had failed, and required manufacturers to agree on one method. In the US this became mandatory in the mid-1990s, in Europe a little later — first for petrol cars, then for diesels too. A car newer than that line must answer to the standard; older, it may have no such connector at all. More on that boundary in OBD-I: why a very old car will not connect.
What you can actually learn through the connector
- Fault codes — not as text but as a short code like P0301. The explanation comes from the app, not the car: the standard defines only the number, not a human explanation of it. Where to start with a particular code — for example P0171.
- Live data — RPM, temperature, pressure, load — what used to be visible only to a mechanic on a diagnostic bench, now on a phone screen.
- Readiness of the self-tests — whether the car has passed its internal emissions-system checks. A separate and important topic on its own — readiness for the emissions test.
What you will NOT learn through this connector
And one more boundary: OBD-II does not program or reflash modules. It reads, and it lets you clear a code — but it does not write new settings into a module. That is a separate procedure on closed equipment, and it is not what this site or this app does.
Where to start yourself
Look for the connector under the wheel, usually below and to the left of the steering column — 16 pins, trapezoid shape.
