What the letters and digits in a fault code mean

P0171, C0035, U0100 — five characters, and each says something. Once you can read them, an unfamiliar code makes sense without a reference.

A fault code is not a random string. It is five characters, and each sits in its own place. Learn them once and an unfamiliar code will make sense before you even open the reference.

Let us take P0171 apart.

First character — a letter: whose code it is

The letter says which system of the car complained.

This is the first thing to look at. An ordinary OBD-II adapter reliably reads only P codes; C, B and U are usually out of its reach — why that is, is covered separately: why a scanner does not show ABS and airbag faults.

Second character — a digit: generic or manufacturer code

There are only two values here, and the difference between them is large.

0 — a generic code. It is the same for every make, its meaning is written into the standard, and these are the codes our reference explains. P0171 means «lean mixture» on a Volkswagen and on a Toyota alike.

1 — a manufacturer code. The maker invented it, and the same number means different things on different marques. P1101 is about the air sensor on one car and about something else entirely on another. Such codes are looked up in the documentation for that particular model, and any reference that offers to «decode» them without naming the make is making it up.

Digits 2 and 3 are rarer and follow roughly the same split.

Third character — a digit: which part of the system

For P codes this is the most useful position. It narrows the search at once:

So P0171 is about the mixture and P0301 is about ignition — clear before you read a word of the description.

The reference sections are grouped by the same digit: all the ignition codes together, all the emissions codes together.

Last two characters — the number

The number of the fault within its group. Nothing to guess here, but adjacent numbers are almost always about adjacent things: P0171 is a lean mixture on bank one, P0174 the same on bank two.

What this gives you

Faced with an unfamiliar P0455 you read: an engine code, generic, from the emissions group. The rest is not hard to guess — and indeed it is an evaporative leak, which most often starts at the fuel cap.

Faced with P1450 you know straight away: manufacturer-specific, and a generic reference is useless — you need documentation for your own make.

If several codes came at once, paste them all into the multi-code reader — it shows where they add up to a single cause and where they are separate faults.
