PID 0E°
Timing advance
How many degrees before the piston's top the unit fires the spark. The earlier the spark, the more power — but on detonation the unit retards it to save the engine.
What is normal
Constant small movement is normal. A steady retard under load means the unit hears knock: poor fuel, carbon or overheating.
These figures hold for most cars, but the maker has the last word: some engines run hotter or idle higher by design.
We have a detailed piece on thisKnock sensor: P0324, P0325, P0327, P0328
How it feels behind the wheel
The same fault shows itself in different ways. Each sign below says what to look at in the live data.
Knocking under loadUnder acceleration or on a hill the engine makes a metallic rattle, as if small change were being shaken. It goes away at steady throttle. It jerks under accelerationAt steady throttle everything is fine, but under acceleration the car jerks or hesitates, as if the pedal was released for a moment.
How to see it
In CarScan: the Live data tab, «Start polling». The app asks the car several times per second, draws a graph and remembers the highest and lowest value of the trip.
