CarScan and other scanner apps: what is actually different
There are plenty of OBD-II apps, and some have millions of installs and years of history. Honestly about what they do well, and what we chose to do differently — not «we are better».
The well-known multi-platform scanners are a real, time-tested tool: a large user base, flexible dashboard configuration for any set of parameters, and for some, their own add-ons and plugin communities. If you need a custom gauge layout for a particular track day, that is their strength, and there is nothing to argue with there.
We set out to solve a different problem, and here is the actual difference.
A code is not the end of the conversation, it is the start
Many scanners honestly show what the standard itself provides: the code P0301 and its short official name. From there, a person goes off to search the internet for what it means on their particular car.
Every one of the 298 codes in our reference has a walkthrough: not just what the code means, but where to start checking — in plain language, in two languages at once. For example, error P0171: not just «system too lean», but what to look at first, second, third.
Not every entry point needs a code
Sometimes the lamp is not lit and there is no code yet, but the car already behaves oddly — it runs rough, idle wanders, fuel use climbed. For that we have a separate symptoms section: what to watch for by feel behind the wheel, not only by a code that has not shown up yet.
Honest about the limits instead of silent about them
Steps, not just numbers
Beyond the code walkthroughs we have step-by-step guides for particular tasks — resetting the service interval, checking a car before buying — with a direct caveat about where it will not work on every car or with every adapter, rather than a promise that it always will.
Which to pick
If you need a flexible dashboard builder with dozens of configurable parameters, that is the strength of the large, long-running projects, and that is a fair thing to say.
