Oil pressure: codes P0520, P0521, P0522, P0523, P0524
The red oil can lit up, or the scanner returned P0521 — and you have a second to decide whether the sensor is lying or the engine really has no pressure. The difference between those two is measured in engines.

The short answer: react to the red oil lamp immediately, investigate the code. The lamp and the code come from different places, and that is the main thing to know about this group.
The lamp and the code are not the same thing
Most cars have two separate devices. The red oil can is lit by a simple switch: pressure drops below a threshold, the contact closes, the lamp comes on. It measures nothing; it only answers «yes» or «no».
Codes P0520–P0524 come from another sensor — the one that measures pressure and reports a number to the control unit. That one can lie gradually: show something other than reality.
Hence a rule worth learning before you need it:
- red oil lamp on — stop the engine now, do not drive on. A minute without pressure costs more than a tow;
- code present, lamp off — almost always sensor electrics.
What each code means
P0520 — sensor circuit fault. The unit receives no meaningful signal at all. An open circuit, a connector, a chafed wire.
P0522 — low signal, P0523 — high. This is no longer «no signal» but «signal outside the possible». No engine, alive or dead, produces such a pressure — so the fault is in the wiring or the sensor, not in the oil pump.
P0521 — reading out of range. The nastiest of the four: the signal is plausible but does not match the operating mode. Here the sensor may well be healthy.
P0524 — pressure really is too low. The unit claims it measured and got very little. This code is not about electrics.
What to look at in the app
Oil pressure is not part of the mandatory OBD-II set — the standard is about emissions, not lubrication. But two neighbouring readings say enough.
Oil temperature: hot oil is thinner, and on a warm engine at idle the pressure is legitimately lower. A code that only appears after a long traffic jam and disappears when cold is the classic picture of a worn engine on too thin an oil, not of a broken sensor.
Coolant temperature serves the same purpose: telling «when cold» from «when hot». And if the needle is also climbing, the conversation is no longer about oil.
Do take a freeze frame: the revs and temperature at the moment the code was stored answer the main question — did this happen hot at idle, or out on the motorway.
A common cause mistaken for a fault
Oil that is too thin. An engine designed for 5W-40 running 0W-20 in hot weather will honestly show low pressure at idle — and log P0521 or P0524. Nothing is broken.
The second most common is a clogged oil pickup rather than the pump. The third is the sensor itself: it lives in a hot, dirty place and ages earlier than much else.
What to do, in order
- Check the oil level with the dipstick. Yes, literally first: half the cases end here.
- Look at which oil is in the engine and what the manufacturer asks for.
- Take a freeze frame — at what revs and what temperature.
- The sensor connector: oil inside it and green contacts are visible to the eye.
- After that — a mechanical gauge in place of the sensor. That is the only way to learn the real pressure, and it is a workshop job.
⚠️ If the engine also knocks, is noisy at idle, or has already stalled while driving, steps two to five happen on a tow truck, not under its own power.
