Five new symptoms and four new dashboard lights
Heavy steering, a cold heater, AdBlue and start-stop. We added what people search for in words rather than by code.
Trouble usually starts not with a code but with words: «the steering has gone heavy», «the heater blows cold», «what is this symbol». Two sections of the site answer exactly those questions, and both have grown noticeably.
Symptoms: 20 instead of 15
The symptoms section is for people who do not know the code. Five were added:
- The steering has gone heavy — the power steering needs current, and with a weak battery it shuts down first. That is protection, not a failure.
- The heater blows cold — if the engine never reaches working temperature, the trouble is the thermostat.
- The air conditioning will not come on — the relay circuit is checked before anyone talks about regassing.
- Will not start in Park — more often the sensor's adjustment after someone else's repair than the sensor.
- The revs are capped — limp mode never arrives by itself; another code always causes it, and that is what to fix.
Every symptom, as before, starts with what to watch in live data and then lists causes cheapest first. That order is not decoration but content: people check from the top down and should not start by replacing a steering rack.
Dashboard lights: 27 instead of 23
Four missing symbols appeared in the lights section:
AdBlue — the most important of the four. On many diesels an empty tank means the engine will not start next time. That is required by law and is not a fault — but someone who was not told ends up at «the car will not start and nobody knows why». Topping up is cheap; running to zero is not.
Start-stop — a crossed-out symbol is almost always about the battery rather than a failed system. And the thing people forget: after a battery change the new one often has to be registered, or start-stop will never engage.
Fog lights — rear ones in clear weather dazzle the driver behind worse than main beam.
Low washer fluid — in winter use freeze-resistant fluid only: summer fluid bursts the bottle and the pump in frost.
It is all connected
A symbol leads to codes, a code to a symptom, a symptom back to codes and to the readings worth checking. Those links are computed from the same data rather than kept as a second list: that is why, the moment the «heavy steering» symptom appeared, U0131 and C0051 started pointing to it by themselves.
If you do not know the code, start with a symbol or a symptom. If you have a code, paste it into the reader — and if there are several, all the more so: they often come from one cause.
