The dashboard symbol page now leads somewhere

A dashboard lamp is the most common way in: you can see it without any adapter. Yet the lamp page led only to the code reference — a list of numbers to guess your own from.

The dashboard symbol page now leads somewhere

Somebody sees an amber symbol on the dashboard and searches in words: «a light with a spanner came on», «AdBlue warning with a countdown». They land on that symbol's page — and that is the right place.

From there, until today, they got: what it means, what to do step by step, and a list of codes usually behind it. Meanwhile the detailed walkthrough — about that very lamp — was written and sitting in the blog. There was no way into it from the lamp page: you had to guess the code and click it.

What has changed

Eighteen symbols now have a «what to read next» block. For example:

What we did not do

Nine green symbols have no walkthrough and will not get one: an open door, a seat belt, indicators, main beam. An invented link there would be worse than none.

The links are set by hand rather than matched by words: «covers» and «mentions» cannot be told apart from the text, and automatic matching would send people into an article about something else.

The numbers

There are 27 symbols, 15 of them amber or red — all fifteen have a walkthrough. In total 18 symbols carry one, across 23 distinct addresses. A check makes sure the block is not merely present in the data but visible on the live page, and that it carries the language across in the English version.
