Boost is the one system where the fault can go both ways: pressure can be too low or too high. The unit watches it constantly and on deviation almost always drops the car into limp mode: driving without power is unpleasant but safer.

Two opposite faults

P0299 — not enough boost. The most common cause is not the turbo but air escaping on the way: a cracked pipe, a loose clamp, a leaking intercooler. The turbo is intact and spinning.

P0234 — overboost. Pressure above what the unit allows. Usually a seized wastegate actuator: the turbo cannot dump the excess.

P0243, P0245, P0246 — the control valve. This is the electrical part of the actuator, and here the scanner answers directly.

What to look at in the app

Not every car reports boost as a separate parameter, but most have intake pressure. On a naturally aspirated engine it always stays below atmospheric; on a turbo car under load it must go above — that is the boost. If it does not rise at full throttle, air is being lost before the cylinders.

Also check fuel trims: a boost leak after the air meter makes the mixture rich, and the trims move to minus.

What a scanner will not show

Shaft play, the state of the wheel, oil traces — that is inspection, not code reading. The scanner honestly says «the pressure is wrong» but not why. So the order is: first rule out leaks and the valve by codes and readings, and only then remove pipes and look at the turbo itself.

Why not to put it off

Driving with a boost leak means a permanently wrong mixture and an overworked turbo: it keeps trying to make up the pressure and runs at higher speed. A cracked pipe worth a few pounds turns into a turbo worth thousands exactly this way.
