Guidance added for the gearbox, oil pressure and fuel level

27 codes that used to carry a single line of definition. Most of the new text went where the name frightens people most.

Guidance added for the gearbox, oil pressure and fuel level

The code reference now has 183 codes with guidance out of 298. Today's batch is 27, and they were not picked alphabetically.

The gearbox

The thinnest part of the reference: fourteen codes, not one of which said a word about what to do. Meanwhile «gearbox» frightens people more than any other word in a car, and these pages are read more than most.

Now covered: P0701, P0705, P0710, P0711, P0717, P0720, P0725, P0730, P0741, P0743, P0750, P0751, P0755 and P0756.

The common thread is nicer than it sounds: for half of these the first move is to check the fluid level and condition and the transmission connector on the outside. Solenoids stick because of dirty fluid far more often than they die.

P0705 deserves a mention: the car will not start in Park and every gear letter lights up at once. Often it is not the sensor but its adjustment after someone else's repair — and adjustment is free.

Oil pressure

P0520, P0521, P0522, P0523, P0524 — here one warning matters more than the codes, and it stands in all five: if the red oil pressure light is on, stop the engine and do not drive on. Oil starvation kills an engine in minutes. Working out whether the sensor lies or the pressure fell can come after that, not instead.

Fuel level and speed

P0460P0463 look harmless — a lying fuel gauge. But while the code is present some self-tests never finish, and an emissions test can fail.

P0501, P0502, P0504 cover speed and the brake pedal. P0504 has a recognisable symptom: cruise control will not engage and the gearbox will not leave Park — and the culprit is a cheap stop-light switch.

And one code that is not a fault

P1000 means exactly one thing: since the codes were cleared or the battery disconnected, the car has not run its self-tests. There is nothing to fix — you have to drive. But you cannot pass an emissions test with it, and that is worth knowing in advance.

Guidance is written once for the site and the app alike — it is the same text.
